I am originally from South Africa and grew up in Cape Town. I emigrated to Australia in 1998 and have lived in Western Australia since 2002. I completed my schooling with the equivalent of a year 12 and went on to study a three-year Graphic Design Diploma at the Cape Technicon in Cape Town. I spent my graphic design working life in
advertising and design in Cape Town, Edinburgh (Scotland) and Australia.
In 2015 I started painting full time after selling a small food business I was a partner in, based in the south west.
I am a self-taught painter and work in acrylics onto linen or canvas. I paint still lives of objects that resonate with me primarily through shape, colour and texture.
My work has a particular considered form and palette, with a strong sense of the objects within the confines of the canvas, creating a monumental intimacy that draws the viewer in.
Each carefully selected object has a lavish attention to detail with subtle nuances and pattern. The power of the objects lies in their perceived triviality. The genre of still life is one of reliability, repetition and memory. It is a world of habit and continuity, of objects whose primary function has remained fixed and unchanged.
My focus on the objects erases their function to a certain extent as they become
more than just their physical and are viewed for their inherent beauty.
