Belinda Birchall, Jennifer Sadler and Laura Newbury bring together three distinct practices in an evocative exploration of beachside living.
From the textured depth of encaustic surfaces to the gestural markings of collographs, to finely rendered drawings in charcoal and the bold colour of oils and acrylics — each artist captures a different facet of our connection to the ocean.
Unified by their subject and inspired by the ever-changing rhythms of tide and light, their works speak to memory, place and the sensory experience of coastal life.
To all who love the sea and ocean, we welcome you to join us in celebrating the official opening on
Saturday, 27th September

The Studio Gallery will host a special Artists in Residence program, with celebrated artists Paula Wiegmink and Sue Smorthwaite who will be working from within the gallery, developing new pieces and sharing insights into their practice.
Paula Wiegmink's paintings reflect her lifelong passion for wildlife conservation and are alive with movement, colour, and emotion, capturing both the fragility and resilience of her subjects. She often juxtaposes this with the marks of human history, with objects from our past, inviting audiences to see our wild world with fresh eyes and sense of connection.
Sue Smorthwaite works in the expressive medium of felt, shaping sculptural forms that are tactile, fluid, and deeply connected to the natural environment. Her practice explores texture, rhythm, and organic form, offering a contemporary take on fibre-based sculpture.
Visitors are warmly invited to drop by, watch the artists at work, and enjoy a rare opportunity to engage in conversation about inspiration, process, and the journey from concept to creation.
This residency continues The Studio Gallery’s tradition of connecting art lovers with the makers themselves—fostering conversations that enrich understanding and appreciation of contemporary practice.

Jules Sher’s practice has always been grounded in abstraction, seen through his minimalist, meditative landscapes. More recently, inspired by a 2024 group exhibition at Linton & Kay Gallery, Sher has embraced collage and geometric abstraction—translating light, form, and colour into dynamic arrangements that both surprise and energise.
This exhibition brings together four new works that highlight Sher’s continuing evolution as an artist—expanding the language of landscape into new abstract horizons.

All welcome!
We are thrilled to present Jean Sher as our upcoming Feature Artist at The Studio Gallery with her exhibition Small Walls.
Prepare to step into the artist’s quiet contemplation of the natural world with an evocative collection of intimate-format paintings that resonate with the serenity, drama and light of the West Australian landscape.
Working entirely from memory, Jean captures fleeting moments — Rottnest’s sculptural trees, early dawn over the paddocks, storm-lit skies and moonlit bays—rendered in her signature expressive style.
Each work in this collection, though small in scale, carries the weight of atmosphere and emotion. Painted in oil and acrylic and beautifully framed, Small Walls is a lyrical journey, where every small canvas tells a big story.
We look forward to welcoming you to the Official opening on Saturday 9 August at 10am, where you will have the opportunity to meet Jean Sher and view the collection first hand.

Mel Brigg’s art is characterised by a blend of textural and abstract elements with figurative imagery, resulting in paintings that are both emotive and evocative. His work often delves into the complexities of human migration, particularly addressing the experiences of those leaving Africa and asylum seekers in Australia. Central to his artistic approach are elements such as light, perspective, texture, structure, and atmospheric colour, that come together to create compelling and thought-provoking works. Mel’s paintings reflect his deep commitment to social and environmental issues. His work is a testament to the power of visual storytelling in addressing important themes.
"The Language of Flowers is a signature concept in my art practise, exploring the fundamental connections between humanity and nature. Interlacing botanicals and figures blur the line between the natural world and the human form to convey the belief everything is connected at the deepest level. I am biophilic by nature, inherently drawing strength from a lifelong lived in the Australian bush. These works are an interpretation of the immersive experience of my nature affinity, they encourage us to lean in, engage a sense of belonging and advocate a more mindful conscious relationship with the natural world and ourselves." - Lori Pensini 2025
Presenting an exhibition that has been many years in the making!
Both artists share the love of the Pilbara and Kimberley regions, which is reflected in each of their unique style of painting. A result of many camping trips together.

Objects have stories. They are witnesses to our lives, holding the echoes of people, events, and places that have shaped us. In this collection, I explore the quiet, powerful resonance of these everyday markers—the humble vessels of memory that tether us to moments, both fleeting and monumental.
Through still life paintings of aged China, silver, delicate glassware, and contemporary pottery and ceramics, I invite viewers to reflect on the emotional weight these objects carry. Each piece is more than an arrangement of items; it is a portrait of connection—a tribute to the relationships, celebrations, and spaces that define our humanity. The chipped edge of a bowl, the faded pattern of a teacup, or the curve of a jug becomes a visual metaphor for the fragile yet enduring nature of memory.
This body of work evolved from a deep appreciation for the objects left behind by my own loved ones and the stories they tell. They are placeholders for absence, physical stand-ins for intangible experiences. My intent is not to preserve these memories in a static way but to reanimate them, to spark personal reflection and remind us of the richness embedded in the seemingly ordinary.
I hope that as you move through this exhibition, you are reminded of your own markers—the tokens and touchstones that connect you to people and moments that live on, shaping who you are today.
