Laura paints because she believes it to be an atavistic pursuit which transcends the transience and vagaries of fashion. That is not to say that she would dismiss the notion of reinvention, quite the opposite in fact.
For her the development of a painting language is ongoing and is the essence of her work. It demands changes in subject, innovation in materials and constant exploration of the mark making process. It’s all about “the perfect picture”, an image and a surface which lurks in the back of her mind but has not yet been realised. She inches towards the goal, backwards sometimes forwards, her progress isn’t necessarily linear, but she can occasionally see glimpses, a moment in a work not necessarily her most recent, which nudges her forward, a little closer.
Laura has, after all, 25 years worth of material to edit and review to orchestrate and resolve from student pictures at The Slade to works created in her Sydney studio last week.
