WINNER - Ashurst Emerging Artist Prize 2025

We are incredibly proud of Sue Eva for being chosen as the winner of the Ashurst Emerging Artist Prize 2025 in the Lester Prize for her artwork, Sue's Space - Acrylic on canvas, 54 x 54 cm.

Judges Dr Christopher Allen, Professor Susanna Castleden and Margaret Moore said of Sue Eva's artwork:

“A quiet but enigmatic picture in which a technically accomplished painting of a silver teapot, perhaps a family heirloom, turns out to contain many other layers: not only a subtle and suggestive self-portrait by the artist – part of a long tradition of self-portraits in convex mirrors – but multiple portraits, truncated and upside-down. An emerging artist is by definition one that has not yet shown all that he or she can do, and we look forward to seeing what comes next for Sue Eva.”
Artist Statement: "I’m so honoured to be a finalist in this prestigious portraiture prize. To have my work selected among so many talented peers is both humbling and motivating. In my practice I often paint reflections that blur or exclude me, this self-portrait was an opportunity to represent myself as an integral part of the physical painting process. Thank you to Sandy Tippett who suggested it and encouraged me to enter."
A deserving honour for such a unique painting and wonderful artist. Well done Sue Eva!
