Artist Statement
As a painter, I instinctively feel that the landscape is truly important as subject matter. It is vital to our existence and will always remain an inspiration.
Its complexity and variety enables me to draw visual and emotional responses from endless images. This has sustained my interest across time.
Through filtered memory, I reassemble images, carefully striking a balance between realism and abstraction.
I approach images through two perspectives simultaneously – a topographical view of the earth in relation to the atmospheric space of the sky, using the horizon line as a constant motif.
Essential to the content of my paintings are the physical elements of earth, water, sun, moon and stars. Also included are the ephemeral elements of heat, haze, wind, dust, shadows and reflections. They contribute mood and atmosphere to the landscapes.
Most important is capturing a moment of the ever changing light and colour of passing time.
Many Australian artists have taken the landscape and stamped it with their own vision.
By paying homage to Western Australia, I hope to do the same.
