Catherine Tate is a contemporary ceramic artist whose practice transforms clay into hand-built sculptural vessels with a duality reflective of her creative nature.
The clarity and order of her background as a Graphic Designer underpin the form and structure of her work, while the free, organic mark-making process infuses them with life and movement.
Catherine finds inspiration in the world she observes. The texture rich coastlines and lush headlands that surround her in New South Wales, to the urban lines and architectural details, minimalistic modern interiors to the weathered beauty and patina of aged structures. “I seek to capture patterns, textures and rhythms - waves rolling into rockpools, ocean lane markers or weathered surfaces - thorough layered clay, glazes and expressive mark-making.”
Her work has been exhibited in leading Sydney galleries including Saint Cloche, Art Gallery on Darling, and Kerry Lowe Gallery, and is represented by Modern Times in Melbourne and Lakshmi in Paddington. In 2022, her piece 'It’s a Weird World' was shortlisted for the National Emerging Art Prize.
