Kay is a painter and printmaker with a passionate interest in the natural environment. Her practice is reflective of her life in Margaret River with many of the regions native birds and animals featuring in her work. The subtle gouache images are painted onto Hahnemuhle paper that Kay has embossed with local plants to create a textured backdrop. The role of fire and regeneration is emulated by her use of fumage, a technique that deposits the smoke and soot from a candle onto the paper giving the work an ethereal appearance.
Kay earned her Bachelor of Arts, (Visual Arts), from Edith Cowan University in 2002 and in 2005 added Honours in Visual Arts to her qualifications. Since then, Kay has been represented regularly in group exhibitions and competitions. At the South Western Times Survey 2009 Kay's work was acquired by the City of Bunbury Art collection. In 2010 Kay received 2nd prize in the painting category of the Waterhouse Natural History Prize held at the South Australian Museum. She also won the Shire of Busselton Signature Southwest art competition in 2010. In 2011 Kay was commissioned to do an etched zinc mural for the new Augusta Margaret River Shire Administration and Civic Centre. Churchlands Senior High School invited Kay to be their guest artist in 2016. Kay contributes to the artistic life of the area by her own work, teaching and as a volunteer with Arts Margaret River and the Foyer Gallery team.
