Martin was born in England in 1951. He developed a keen interest in wildlife and drawing while living with his family in England, Malaya and Hong Kong.
In 1967, the family migrated to Perth providing a new environment for his art.
He was employed by the W A Museum in Aboriginal Sites and Exhibition and Design Departments where his skills in taxidermy, art and model making were used. Numerous field trips including the Pilbara and Kimberley provided him with additional background for his artwork.
While freelancing in 1981, he illustrated the Western Australian Bird Folio – a limited edition book.
He was employed in the Department of Anatomy and Human Biology at the University of Western Australia as a medical illustrator for 16 years.
With the advent of computers, he returned to freelancing and was contracted to the W A Museum for the construction of Dinosaurs and Megafauna.
He worked at Notre Dame University as Manager of Laboratories in Arts and Sciences for 8 years.
